- ground beef – use ground turkey or chicken if you prefer.
- diced tomatoes – this is optional. We liked the additional flavor it added but it is not necessary. If you don’t like tomatoes, omit them.
- ketchup
- barbecue sauce – this particular sloppy Joe has a BBQ twist. If. you don’t like BBQ then just pick up a can of Manwich and make it with ground beef and add it to the top of the garlic bread. Or you can try my Homemade Sloppy Joe recipe.
- Worcestershire sauce
- sugar (optional) – it balances out a bit of the acidity from the tomatoes. You do not have to add it. If you have a sweet enough BBQ sauce, that will also help as well.
- garlic Texas toast – I usually just buy the store brand.
- shredded cheddar cheese
HOW TO MAKE TEXAS TOAST SLOPPY JOES
Brown and crumble ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease.
Return meat to skillet and add in diced tomatoes, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Note: As I said above, the added sugar is optional in this. I think it helps balance out the acidity of the tomatoes. But if you are using a very sweet barbecue sauce then you may not feel the added sugar is necessary. Just go by taste here. Give it all a good stir until combined then cover and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes.
While this is cooking, prepare your garlic Texas toast according to package directions. When bread is ready, spoon filling on top of bread and then sprinkle with shredded cheese. The cheese should melt from the heat of the sloppy Joe mixture.
