How to remove limescale
If you want to remove limescale , you can scrape off the deposits, but you risk damaging and scratching the chrome plating of the tap.
The best solution is to soften and break down limescale deposits using an acid solution before scrubbing.
To achieve this, you can use anti-limescale products or use common household products such as vinegar, lemon or bicarbonate of soda . Fortunately, limescale is easily removable with these delicate acids.
So run to the kitchen, grab a lemon, a bottle of vinegar, baking soda and dishcloths and follow our advice.
Remove limescale with lemon
A great remedy for removing limescale from taps is lemon. It contains gentle citric acid that dissolves minerals very well and can be used on chrome, brass or copper taps.
Here is the procedure you need to follow:
- Cut a lemon in half . You can also use a used lemon as long as there is enough juice left to remove the limescale.
- Position it and push it against the tap so that the cut side faces the end of the tap and covers the entire area where the water comes out.
- Secure the lemon in place with plastic wrap or using rubber bands so that it stays in place. Keep it in place for at least 2/3 hours or overnight if possible .
- Remove the lemon , take a sponge and clean the affected area. The acid in the lemon should have removed all traces of limescale.
- After cleaning with the sponge, there may be some limescale residues left that need to be removed. Use an old toothbrush to clean the faucet splash holes and enjoy your shiny faucet.
Remove limescale with baking soda
Sodium bicarbonate , our faithful ally in many household jobs, is another effective remedy for removing limescale from taps.
- Make a paste of one part distilled water and three parts baking soda .
- Dip a sponge into the freshly made paste and rub gently on the faucet. Let it rest for an hour.
- Then wipe the faucet with a damp cloth to remove the solution and dry with a dry cloth.
Remove limescale with vinegar
Vinegar , like lemon, also works brilliantly on limescale. This is an effective remedy when you’re dealing with a stubborn layer of limescale . Follow the procedure below:
- Pour water and white vinegar into a bowl and mix well. Adjust the amount of solution based on the size of the area to be cleaned and make sure it is enough to soak a cloth in.
- Soak the cloth generously in the solution and rub it on the limescale.
- Dip the cloth into the solution again and wrap it around the faucet . Let it sit overnight or at least 3-4 hours. Alternatively, you can fill a plastic bag with the solution and secure it to the faucet with a rubber band.
- Remove the cloth or bag and gently rub the surface to remove any limescale residue . Again, use a toothbrush to scrub the tough spots .
- Wash the tap with warm water and dry thoroughly with a dry cloth .
